Job Description: Interpretation and Education Internship PositionLocation: Pullman National Historical Park

Pay: $17.40/HourWork Environment:
Pullman National Historical Park is in Chicago, an urban environment. This position is mainly based out of the National Park Service Visitor Center and involves a significant amount of office work with opportunities for offsite field work with park partners. As we build visitor services the intern can expect to work alongside additional interns, and seasonal park staff.Description:
Located at Pullman National Historical Park and Emmett Till and Mamie Mobile Till National Monument. The intern will continue research identifying the residences in Bronzeville (Chicago) of Black on-board rail car workers for the Pullman company that includes the Pullman Porters. Using this research, they will develop an interpretive story map and other interpretive products to enhance the public understanding of this lesser known story. Their efforts will support the park’s activities celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the BSCP in 2025.The intern will also help develop the first informal interpretive activities at the new Chicago unit of TILL. They will greet and engage the public at the Chicago TILL location during the busy summer months.Mentorship:
In the shared workspace, the intern will be set up for success. Expectations will be conveyed through an active work plan. The intern will collaboratively participate in the development of their workplan to ensure they are meeting park goals as well as their own development interests. The intern will collaborate with the Supervisor and park team daily. They will also have opportunities for independent work. They will brief their supervisor weekly, using their daily work log that helps track their growth and accountability. The intern will be able to take advantage of the diverse existing park partnerships with nonprofit, city, and state partners. The intern will have opportunity to network with professionals from nearby Indiana Dunes National Park and Chicago cultural institutions like the Field Museum Chicago History Museum. The supervisor will work closely with the intern to guide additional development opportunities that match their interests.Desired Skills and Qualifications:
The candidate should be open to working with diverse people from different backgrounds, seeking common understanding and shared interests. Must be comfortable working in an urban environment and have a general interest in the National Park Service and Pullman National Historical Park.

  • Candidate should have at least one year of college level courses, strong communication skills, the ability to operate a vehicle, and the ability to walk and stand for several hours each day.
  • Experience with education or youth programs desired. College courses in education, history, public policy, environmental justice, and public speaking are helpful.
  • The candidate should be open to working with diverse people from different backgrounds, seeking common understanding and shared interests.

Requirements:

  • Participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-cardholder) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher. education during the summer internship.
  • Spanish language skill highly preferred

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
  • Must be between 16 and 30 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident
  • Current student or recent graduate (no more than two years)
  • Available for participation in workshop in Washington, D.C from August 3rd – 8th, 2025

Right in Pullman NHPs back yard, the park is connected to the Pullman neighborhood with a variety of housing types. Some of our rangers live in the neighborhood and enjoy a 10-minute walk to work. Pullman is easily connected to public transportation systems via direct train and bus routes within the park boundary. Located off the major interstate allows for commuting from within Chicago and from nearby Indiana only 25 minutes away. Intern will need their own transportation. A valid driver’s license is required. The intern will accompany rangers at outreach events. The park has a vehicle for use for community offsites. The intern is expected to have reliable transportation to work site. Pullman is pretty accessible: shopping and medical centers that are within reasonable walking distance. We have a train line that connects the park with rest of the city.More About the Location:
The park is on the south side of Chicago between 103rd and 115th streets and south Cottage Grove Avenue. The community is an 1880’s planned residential community and manufacturing site for the Pullman Palace Car Company. Historic red brick rowhouse homes remain, along with some former manufacturing buildings under development by the state and federal governments as a public historic park. There are two grocery stores nearby, with commercial retail a short drive or commute away. Pullman is located within walking distance
of 2 medical facilities. Pullman is a close-knit community. There are a variety of community clubs and civic organizations that help make Pullman vibrant. There is something for everyone one here. Residents are excited they live in a National Park site and proud of their history. The variety of cultural institutions in Chicago fosters a rich cultural scene. Public transportation offers a connection to the diverse 77 neighborhoods in Chicago, including CTA buses and the Metra Electric train line located in the neighborhood. While located in the city, Pullman is also connected to outdoor recreational opportunities via the Chicago Park District
and Cook County Forest Preserves. Pullman is a gateway to the broader Chicago area which hosts a variety of cultural, academic, and recreational opportunities.
