Job Description: Position OverviewThis position is responsible for specialized medical billing and clerical accounting tasks to retrieve payment for medical services rendered to patients. Position ensures that correct reimbursement is received for services provided in multiple program components. This includes billing and securing payments from many third-party sources including Medicaid, Medicare, insurance carriers, contract companies, and clients. This position has significant direct interactions with all Cumberland County Health Department programs. This position will also assist with discharge in all clinics.Examples of DutiesDuties for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Acts as Specialized Medical Biller by carrying out various medical billing and related clerical accounting tasks for any and/or all clinical programs within the agency.
- Collect, analyze, and process patient financial and insurance data, entering this data into the Billing System.
- Responsible for posting monies received from various payers including the patient, either electronically or manually in the patient’s account.
- Will serve as back-up to reconciling all daily Accounts Receivable Reports, and monies received.
- Review, correct, follow-up and resubmit any denials concerning non-payment from insurers.
- Check patients for retro Medicaid.
- May be required to file Medicaid, Medicare and Private insurance if needed.
- Review patient accounts monthly and contact insurance carrier or patient to resolve payment issues.
- Schedule Uber Health transportation requests for Health Department patients.
Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.Minimum QualificationsGraduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least three years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or completion of a two-year secretarial science or business administration program with one year of responsible experience as described above; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Management Preference: Two years of additional clerical accounting experience with emphasis on medical billing, medical insurance, and settling patient accounts. Excellent knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and Private Insurance billing and compliance guidelines required, experience in computerized electronic billing.Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the U.S. and its territories must have their academic degrees validated as equivalent to the degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent. - The focus of this position is on medical billing and settling patient accounts. Position must have proficient understanding of medical billing and coding, medical insurance, third party reimbursement.
- Ability to learn quickly, and must have ability to analyze, absorb, and apply new concepts and new information quickly within a patient account setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Considerable ability to record, compile and analyze data.
- Ability to review and process information to determine compliance with applicable laws, rules, or regulations.
- Ability to function successfully and collaboratively within a teamwork environment.
- Must have excellent customer service, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use excellent judgment skills at all times.
Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
