Title of the Job: NUTRITION ASSISTANT

Job Description: Primary Function:The Nutrition Assistant (NA) provides nutrition services and benefits to low-risk WIC participants under the supervision of the Senior Nutritionist. Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a public health program that benefits low- and moderate-income families by providing services to pregnant and postpartum woman with infants and young children up to the age of 5 who are medically or nutritionally at risk.Job Duties:NUTRITION ASSISTANT – CPA I

• Complete CPA I training within 6 months of hire to be able to perform the following duties:
• Provide nutrition care for low-risk children at certification and follow-up visits, including all aspects of:
• Anthropometric and hematological data collection.
• Dietary and nutritional risk assessment.
• Food package assignment.
• Nutrition counseling and education.
• Documentation and nutrition data entry.
• Health and social service referrals.
• Follow-up nutrition education.

NUTRITION ASSISTANT – CPA II

• After completion of CPA I, complete CPA II training to be able to perform the following duties.
• Provide nutrition services to low-risk applicants and participants in all categories of eligibility (infants, children, prenatal, breastfeeding and postpartum people). Responsibilities include:
• Anthropometric and hematological data collection.
• Dietary and nutritional risk assessment.
• Food prescription assignment.
• Nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education.
• Documentation and nutrition data entry.
• Health and social service referrals.
• Follow-up nutrition education.
• Assists in the planning and development of education materials and group nutrition education activities.
• Performs other duties as needed, including participating in quality assurance activities.

DIETETIC TECHNICIAN / NUTRITION ASSISTANT – CPA III(No need to complete CPA I & II training if you have an Associate’s degree in dietetic technology and Dietetic Technician Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).

• Provide nutrition services to low and selected higher risk prenatal and postpartum individuals, infants, and children during certification and follow up visits, including all aspects of:
• Anthropometric and hematological data collection.
• Dietary and nutritional risk assessment.
• Food prescription assignment.
• Nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education.
• Documentation and nutrition data entry.
• Health and social service referrals.
• Follow-up nutrition education.
• Coordination with medical providers and other health and social service providers.

• Participate in planning, development and evaluation of educational materials and group nutrition education sessions, and nutrition in-service activities.
• Handle outreach activities
• Perform other duties as needed, including, assisting in the training of CPA I and II and qualities assurance activities.

QualificationsQualifications:

• Associate’s degree in dietetic technology and Dietetic Technician Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics OR willing to complete CPA I & II training within 6 months to 1 year of hire.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• One year of experience in a health care field as a counselor, educator, clinical assistant, outreach worker, home health aide, or other related position.
• Interest in nutrition or health care.
• Good communications skills, in both oral and written English.
• Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole preferred.
• Good interpersonal skills and sensitivity to the needs of the WIC population.
• Proficiency in data entry and typing.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks in an organized manner.
• Availability to work at multiple WIC sites and during program clinic hours, as needed.
