Job Description: Distinguishing Features of WorkThis is highly technical work in the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of cars, trucks, and heavy equipment. Work is supervised and assisted as needed by a higher-level mechanic or a supervisor.Days and Hours: Monday – Friday 3:00pm – 11:30pmBargaining Unit: Service Employee’s International (SEIU)

  • Completes preventive maintenance on vehicles, trailers, or heavy equipment, such as oil changes, tire rotation, replacing filters, servicing transmissions, lubricating chassis and drive lines.
  • Performs engine and transmission diagnostics with scan tools or laptop computers. Conducts test drives to verify drivability complaints and to verify the repairs made.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems.
  • Diagnose and repair air and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Diagnose and repair automatic and manual transmission drivability issues.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic system issues including hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, and other components on heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair driveline and suspension systems.
  • Diagnose and repair heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Diagnose, repair, rebuilds, and replaces diesel and gas engines.
  • Remove, replace, and modify, mufflers, tailpipes and other exhaust components.
  • Tow vehicles and equipment using a roll back and sling type wrecker.
  • Maintains written record of work performed.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of supervisor in his or her absences.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge of all tools and equipment used in the trade and the ability to use these tools to perform repair work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to weld and cut using gas or electrical equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply information contained in technical repair manuals and electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to climb onto equipment and make repairs as high as 25′ in height.
  • Ability to lift, bend, and twist while making repairs to vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to fluids and solvents in vehicle repair work.
  • Ability to perform continuous manual and physical labor while standing on cement floor.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky objects weighing up to 50 pounds (heavier objects with the assistance of another person) for distances up to 100 feet.
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and employees of other departments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally or in writing.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of supervisor in his or her absences.
  • Must be highly proficient in utilizing diagnostic scan tools and other troubleshooting devises.
  • A valid Kansas driver’s license is required.
  • A valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required.
  • Compliance with ASE policy will be required at time of hire and throughout duration of employment.
  • Possession of at least four eligible ASE certifications when hired.
  • Will require ASE certification attainment consistent with ASE policy.
  • Preferred certifications from tracs A, E, L and T.
  • Skill set will be the primary factor in determining hire, promotion, and transfer decisions between shops.
  • There are five shops that specialize in the maintenance of heavy equipment, light vehicles, fire assets, body shop repairs, and light equipment.
  • Staff assigned to the Heavy Equipment shop shall have extensive knowledge of diesel engines, as well as other equipment that is maintained in this shop.
  • Staff assigned to the Light Vehicle shop shall have extensive knowledge of passenger vehicles and other assets that are maintained in this shop.
  • Staff assigned to the Fire Maintenance shop shall have extensive knowledge of fire apparatus and maintenance practices.
  • Staff assigned to the Body Shop shall have extensive knowledge of the repair of vehicles damaged in accidents.
  • Staff assigned to the Light Equipment shop shall have extensive knowledge of mowers, park maintenance equipment, and other assets that are maintained in this shop.
  • Transfer decisions between these shops will be based on skill set, shop coverage, work flow, and the overall needs of the Division.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
  • Public Works & Utilities is responsible for the operation of many critical systems, such as water and wastewater treatment, the City’s transportation network, and more. Therefore, PW&U employees are the first responders in many emergency situations. When an emergency is declared by the Department Director, or designee, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response, or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.

Required Experience and Training

  • Three years of experience performing a wide range of maintenance and mechanical repair work on vehicular equipment.
  • For Public Works (Fleet Maintenance), also requires attainment of certifications as cited above under Requirements of Work.
  • Must possess a valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) at the time of hire.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Please find more information under the following links:CITY OF WICHITAFULL-TIME EMPLOYEE BENEFITS1. VACATION – Most employees with less than five years employment earn 10 days of vacation per year. After five years, accrual rates increase at varying rates to varying maximums, depending on work schedule and/or union representation. Employees can accumulate and carry forward up to 240 hours each year.2. HOLIDAYS – There are eleven paid holidays. Employees also receive one Personal Holiday that is granted after the first six months of employment.3. SICK LEAVE – Sick leave accrual begins at one-half day per month. After five years, sick leave accruals are one work day per month. Employees can accumulate and carry forward all unused sick leave each year. Employees who use 24 hours (3 days) or less of sick leave in a calendar year earn a “Well Day.” An additional “Well Day” can be earned following a year of perfect attendance.4. HEALTH INSURANCE – UMR / United Healthcare provides two levels of medical and prescription drug plans. Both medical plan are PPOs and do not require selecting a physician or referrals for specialty care. Both medical plans include Teladoc virtual care (primary care/mental health benefits at no charge), Dario healthy living programs, and VSP Vision benefits. Pre-tax premium deductions are offered. The City contributes 80% of the premium cost towards medical, prescription drug and vision insurance.
5. DENTAL INSURANCE – Two Delta Dental plans are offered – Preferred and Traditional. The Delta Preferred plan requires using a dentist from a smaller network for a lower premium. The Delta Traditional plan allows use of any dentist, although benefits are higher using a dentist from the large Delta network. Benefits under both plans are the same (with the exception of some Orthodontic benefits) Pre-tax premium deductions are offered.
6.LIFE INSURANCE – Low-cost voluntary term life insurance is available. Employees pay one-third of the cost. The amount of Basic Life coverage is two times annual pay up to a determined maximum amount. Dependent coverage is available at $20,000 spouse / $10,000 child(ren) for an additional $0.14 per pay period. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is included. The plan is through MetLife.
7.SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE – Additional voluntary employee-paid term life insurance is available from MetLife at low group rates. Participation in Basic Life is required. The Life Insurance plans are portable.
8. LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE- The voluntary employee-paid group disability plan from MetLife provides 60% of pre-disability income for injury or health related disabilities. Premiums are determined by income and age.9.VOLUNTARY ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT – Voluntary employee-paid AD&D from MetLife offers coverage for accidental death and dismemberment.10.RETIREMENT – The City offers two retirement plans – Wichita Employees (WER) Plan 3, and Commissioned Police & Fire Plan C-79. The WER plan is a defined contribution plan; Police & Fire is a defined benefit plan. Both are contributory – employees and the City share the cost.11.FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS – Employees may elect to make FSA pre-tax deductions for dependent care and/or unreimbursed medical expenses, reducing the cost of these expenses by eliminating taxes on the amount deducted.
12. LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE – This plan from UNUM offers facility and home care benefits for employees, spouses, and some other family members. Several options for benefit amount and duration, and specific plan features, are available.
