Job Description: Head of Fund Accounting / Controller

A premier investment management firm specializing in alternative investments is seeking an experienced Head of Fund Accounting / Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for its diverse portfolio of funds and accounts. This position offers the opportunity to join a high-performing team and play a critical role in driving the firm’s financial excellence and operational efficiency.This role requires a hands-on leader who can manage complex accounting functions, regulatory reporting, and operational processes while ensuring the highest standards of compliance and accuracy. Candidates should expect significant involvement in year-end audits and reporting cycles, offering a fast-paced and rewarding environment for growth.Key Responsibilities:Financial Reporting and Oversight
- Lead external reporting processes, including preparing monthly and quarterly financial statements for investors, lenders, and other stakeholders.
- Develop board materials for fund governance and maintain high standards for public and private fund reporting.
- Ensure the timely and accurate completion of financial reporting in alignment with GAAP and industry best practices.
Fund Accounting Leadership
- Oversee fund accounting operations, including reconciliations, performance analysis, and variance reporting.
- Manage the accounting for complex investment instruments such as mortgage loans, derivatives, securitizations, and structured credit products.
- Coordinate with external fund administrators to ensure smooth accounting processes and accurate financial records.
Audit and Tax Coordination
- Spearhead the annual audit process for public and private funds, ensuring seamless coordination with auditors and other stakeholders.
- Oversee tax compliance and accounting related to specialized investment structures, including REITs and taxable REIT subsidiaries (TRS).
- Perform quarterly and annual REIT compliance tests and support tax reporting activities.
Policy Development and Internal Controls
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and memos that comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Design and implement robust internal controls to maintain a strong financial and operational control environment.
- Research complex accounting issues and recommend appropriate treatments under GAAP.
Leadership and Mentorship
- Train, mentor, and manage accounting staff, ensuring professional development and growth.
- Review and oversee the work of junior team members and outsourced staff to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
Process Improvement and Systems Management
- Lead initiatives to improve efficiency and quality in accounting processes and reporting.
- Manage and maintain financial systems, ensuring adequate IT general controls and security.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of fund accounting experience, with a strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Experience with 1940 Act fund accounting is required; exposure to hedge funds, private equity funds, and REITs is a plus.
- Background in public accounting (Big 4 preferred) is advantageous.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial tools; experience with Oracle Financials and Geneva is a plus.
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a proactive problem-solving mindset.

Compensation:
- Salary Range: $250,000 – $325,000 annually, depending on experience.
