Job Description: About the TeamThe Business Intelligence and Growth team (BIG) in Xbox consists of Data Scientists, Analysts, Product Managers, and Engineers who support all of Gaming finding our way out of local maxima and finding our next best growth opportunities. Not only do we report official data and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to the entire organization, we also actively support product and engineering teams to assess opportunities where we should apply effort and resources, as well as measure the results of our collective work.About the roleThe Sr. Principal Economist will partner closely with our Data Scientists, Analysts, and Data Engineers, as well as with product, engineering, and marketing counterparts across Gaming to apply an economics lens to our analyses and recommendations. This role requires understanding and depth of analytic rigor as it relates to market dynamics, pricing strategies, and customer behavior. You will help shape the future of gaming by influencing decisions about our global product offerings, pricing, and helping us compete in a variety of market dynamics. Your work will involve applying economic theories, statistical models, and data analyses techniques to help drive informed decision-making and improve our business performance.This hands-on role will be responsible for partnering across multiple data teams to ensure analyses are considered globally rather than locally and that recommendations are made with consideration to global maxima across Gaming. - Analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights and identify patterns, trends, and relationships relevant to business objectives.
- Conduct economic research to understand market dynamics, consumer behavior, competitive landscape, and industry trends.
- Evaluate pricing strategies, conduct price optimization analysis, and assess the impact of pricing changes on customer demand and profitability.
- Develop economic models and forecasting techniques to support strategic planning, resource allocation and business forecasting.
- Assess the potential economic impact of policy changes, regulatory developments, or market disruptions on the company’s operations and strategies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business leaders, data scientists, engineers, product managers, analysts, and marketers to provide economic insights and recommendations.
- Present findings, insights, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through reports, presentations, and data visualizations.

andQualifications:Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate in relevant field such as Economics, with focus on applied economics, industrial organization or econometrics or other related field AND 5+ years related research experience
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of quantitative and analytical experience in data manipulation, data visualization, and related programming languages (such as Python, R, and/or SQL).
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in relevant field AND 8+ years related research experience.
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.
- Experience with Machine Learning (ML) and/or Artifical Intelligence (AI)
- Experience participating in a top industry conference in relevant research domain.
- Experience working with large datasets and conducting empirical research using economic principles.
- Ability to work well across groups, including engineering, product management, marketing, and finance.
- Prior experience in games/entertainment industry
Research Sciences IC6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 – $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 – $314,400 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
