OverviewPurpose Statement/Position Summary: The Burgener Lab at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated microbiologist with computational experience for a post-doctoral position. Our research focuses on chronic airway infections, particularly those affecting individuals with cystic fibrosis and those with artificial airways (tracheostomies). Our ultimate aim is to enhance treatment options for patients struggling with these persistent infections.Currently, our lab is investigating Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its interactions with bacteriophages. We are particularly interested in understanding how bacteriophages contribute to antimicrobial tolerance/resistance and other survival benefits for bacteria in the airway. Our work involves translational research, utilizing clinical samples and bacterial isolates to complement our laboratory models. The Research Post Doc Fellow, is in training to help develop the academic knowledge and research fundamentals, teaching expertise and administrative experience necessary to be an exemplary researcher. Perform laboratory work and conduct research activities independently or in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. Publish results in scientific manuscripts and research publications. Participate in seminars, meetings, trainings and other educational sessions. Join us in our mission to improve the lives of patients with chronic airway infections through groundbreaking research.Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: Exposure to and/or experience in research in a healthcare environment preferred.PhD in microbiology, epidemiology, infectious disease, or a related field, highly preferred.Proficient in performing computational analysis of bacterial genomes and antimicrobial resistance genes.Skilled in the computational analysis of metagenomic data.Competent in conducting basic microbiological experiments.Ability to analyze metagenomic data and perform microbiome analyses.Experience with microbiological experiments, including biofilm assays.Ability to design, execute, and analyze experiments for manuscript preparation.Maintain accurate experimental records and documentation.Participate in multidisciplinary research collaborations, including with clinicians.Present research findings at national and international conferences and symposia.Team player who enjoys mentoring research associates and undergraduates.Scientifically curious and capable of working independently. * Strong proficiency in next-generation sequencing, including assembly, annotation, sequence alignment, and phylogenetic analysis of bacterial genomes, as well as the assessment of antimicrobial resistance genes.Education/Licensure/Certification: MD and/or PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree.*Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree by their anticipated start date.
Pay Scale Information$29,640.00-$80,196.00CHLA values the contribution each Team Member brings to our organization. Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
