Our compensation and benefits programs are market driven and competitive, with excellent family friendly policies and flexible working provisions.Job DescriptionAre you looking for your next opportunity?Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Sr. Accountant – Statutory Reporting in our Statutory Reporting team.This role will be responsible for preparation of annual and quarterly statutory filings, state specific data calls, supplemental schedules and exhibits, IFRS/US GAAP to Statutory reconciliations, assist with preparation of audited financial statements and disclosures, contribute to success of special projects, and ensure compliance with internal controls.Location: This position will be based out of our Purchase, NY office.   • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual statutory filings, including journal entry preparation, statutory financial statements, underwriting exhibits and schedules, financial accounting supporting schedules, and footnote disclosures.
  • Prepare the reconciliation between IFRS/US GAAP to Statutory basis of accounting.
  • Prepare investment reconciliations between General Ledger and Investment Accounting provider, Clearwater, and review all investment schedules and prepare footnote disclosures
  • Support the statutory financial statement audit process and liaison with internal and external auditors. Ensure compliance with internal controls over statutory reporting.
  • Respond to department of insurance inquiries and state exam requests.
  • Assist with analysis and draft commentary for quarterly balance sheet and income statement analytics.
  • Work closely with senior team members on accounting issues.
  • Stay up to date on current and pending changes to statutory accounting guidance and financial reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with internal finance teams to gather and prepare quarterly and annual statutory filings for large reinsurance company.
  • Evaluate current financial and accounting processes, propose, and implement improvements.
  • Assess technical accounting issues related to statutory accounting regulations for appropriate financial treatment.
  • Actively participate and/or lead AD Hoc Projects, including process improvements, accounting policy, and procedures documentation.
  • Assist with internal/ external audit requests and maintain controls documentation.

What you’ll bring:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in accounting. CPA or MBA is preferred.
  • Either 5+ years of prior Property and Casualty insurance industry experience in a statutory reporting role or 5+ years of prior experience supporting reinsurance or insurance business underwriting activities, such as Bordereau recording, managing TPA’s/MGA’s, technical accounting, cash application, etc.
  • Experience working in a large corporate environment is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and written.
  • Knowledgeable of US GAAP and Statutory Accounting Policies and Procedures.
  • Self-motivated and exhibits ability to build strong relationships with management and team members at various levels, both locally and remotely.
  • Detail oriented and logical/disciplined approach to problem solving.
  • Can manage work effectively, is flexible and adaptable to a rapid changing environment.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills, should be able to effectively collaborate and interact with others.
  • Must be willing to take the initiative to improve processes and resolve problems, including managing multiple initiatives simultaneously, prioritize functions and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, verbal, written interpersonal, communications, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Additional working hours are required at peak periods.
  • Knowledge of SAP General Ledger Accounting System is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Power Query), to manipulate large data sets to satisfy statutory reporting requirements.
  • Experience with Workiva, Wdesk, is preferred and is not required.

Salary Range: $90,000 – $130,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.At Sompo, we recognize that the talent, skills, and commitment of our employees drive our success.
